THE VILLAGE AND THE MARINE
Porto Cervo is the heart of Costa Smeralda and the centre of the area. The settlement occupies all the bay and goes up over the surrounding hills. The part by the sea is built in typical tourist village style, the area over the hills is structured in villas. Thanks to the little streets and squares it has got the dimension and atmosphere of a resort, provided with all the services required by people on holiday. Nearby the old harbour there is a wooden bridge linking the harbour to the centre of the town. From here a series of paths, porches and stairs allow everyone to reach the various sights of the village including the most exclusive shops, bars and nightclubs.
To the north of the bay there is the marina of Porto Cervo, a new harbour where the most luxurious boats of the Mediterranean sea dock.
You can find here also the Costa Smeralda Yacht club.
The harbour has 650 boat spaces for crafts from 6.5 to 55 metres long. Every boat space is connected to electricity, water, telephone and television. The harbour also has a radio station, a telephone exchange, weather station, customs, fuel. The harbour includes the Old Pier, the oldest dock of the area. It is surrounded by the Maison du Port and the Harbour Office, two typical examples of the architectural styles used in the coast, one bizarre and spectacular, the other traditional, using the typical materials of Gallura. On the hill that dominates the harbour there is the church ‘Stella Maris’ with its sinuous shape and its porch made of granite rock. It houses valuable paintings and particularly a Madonna by El Greco. From the open space in front of the church you can see all the bay. A steep flight of steps on the right of the church leads to the settlement of Sa Conca, which offers another panoramic view of the bay. Another flight of steps leads to the harbour for a walk to view the most beautiful boats in the Mediterranean.
